Chess Tactics: Forks, Pins, and Skewers
Tactical pattern recognition wins material and delivers checkmate. Master these fundamental patterns.
What Are Tactics
Tactics are immediate forcing sequences winning material or delivering checkmate. While strategy is longterm planning, tactics are concrete calculation. Most games are decided by tactics.
The Fork
One piece attacks two or more enemy pieces simultaneously. Knights are forking specialists due to unique movement. Royal fork: knight attacks king and queen. Most common tactical pattern.
Finding forks: Look for squares where your piece attacks multiple enemy pieces. Knights jump into position. Queens and bishops fork on diagonals. Rooks fork on files and ranks.
The Pin
Piece can\’t move without exposing more valuable piece behind it. Absolute pin: pinned piece legally can\’t move (pinned to king). Relative pin: moving creates material loss but is legal.
Creating pins: Bishops and rooks pin on diagonals and lines. Look for valuable pieces lined up. Breaking pins: Move the rear piece, interpose another piece, attack the pinning piece.
The Skewer
Valuable piece forced to move, exposing less valuable piece behind. Reverse of pin – attacks valuable piece first. Queens, rooks, and bishops create skewers on lines and diagonals.
Discovered Attack
Moving one piece reveals attack from another. Often more powerful than regular attacks because two pieces attack simultaneously. Discovered check especially powerful – moving piece can capture freely.
Double Attack
Similar to fork but broader – any two simultaneous threats. Queen checks king while attacking undefended rook. Pawn attacks two pieces. Forces opponent to abandon one target.
Removal of Defender
Eliminating piece defending key square or piece. Capture the defender even at material cost if it wins more. Common in mating attacks where defender prevents checkmate.
